They strike a very attractive balance between performance and value. Considered warts and all, the 510Ds are utterly recommendable. The 510Ds are far from perfect, and some of the exclusions are extremely frustrating, but all the main parts are in the right places. You can't hold them to the same standards as home speakers - unless you want to read/write consistently negative reviews - but you can use similar criteria, which is a damn good thing for anyone with half decent ears, or "sound flaps," as they're called by audiophiles.įor the most part Creative succeeded. Multimedia speakers, after all, are finally at a point at which they can be judged in the same manner as loudspeakers. Not only did Creative have to pack it with features, but they also had to maintain a high degree of sound quality. Well aware of the competition, the company knew they had to go all out with this system in order to make it fly. The MegaWorks 510D is Creative's most recent 5.1 offering. With hope we'll see a few speaker makers announce such systems at E3, but for now your choices are few. Creative, of course, has been there since day one under the Cambridge SoundWorks brand name.

Klipsch and Midiland each have one, and there are a handful of laughable models, like the InterAct 5.1 system, which actually only has stereo RCA inputs, but the field is still somewhat thin. There are plenty of rock solid 4.1 multimedia speakers, but not many full-blown surround sound rigs. I though there were more 5.1 systems than there actually are.
